OVERVIEW

What you
should know

Voltstream is proposing to develop the Mt Piper AI Data Centre Precinct at 69 Irondale Road, Portland, around 2 km from Mt Piper Power Station.

The project would be built in two stages of up to 500 MW each, served by a new on-site substation connecting to the existing Mt Piper–Bannaby 500 kV transmission line. The project is in early development: grid studies, environmental assessments and community consultation are underway or planned, and the design will change as we learn more.

ϟ

Power

Direct access to existing 500 kV transmission infrastructure. Grid connection remains subject to Transgrid and AEMO studies.

◒

Land

An initial site area of approximately 47 ha, with room considered for future stages, setbacks and infrastructure.

◉

Water

Recycled and non-potable water options will be prioritised. Cooling design and water supply remain under assessment.

⌁

Connectivity

Nearby fibre connectivity, including fibre on transmission towers.

◎

Noise & visual

Detailed noise and visual impact assessments will be undertaken.

◷

Timing

First energisation targeted for 2029/2030 — to be confirmed and subject to approvals.

WHY MT PIPER

The right place for the
next generation of infrastructure

Existing grid

Direct access to the Mt Piper–Bannaby 500 kV transmission line enables large-scale, grid-connected development, reducing the need for new network infrastructure.

A region built on energy

The Central Tablelands has a long history of energy generation, a skilled workforce and strong local supply chains.

Room to grow, responsibly

A regional site allows generous buffers from neighbours and supports a staged build that matches demand.

ABOUT VOLTSTREAM

About the developer

Voltstream is an Australian developer of grid-connected energy and AI data centre infrastructure. We focus on locations with existing high-voltage transmission, so new digital infrastructure can be delivered faster and at lower cost to the network and the community.

COMMUNITY

Benefits for the region

Jobs

Construction and ongoing roles, with opportunities during construction and operation. Numbers are to be estimated.

Local suppliers

We will prioritise local contractors and suppliers, and hold industry briefings ahead of construction.

Skills & training

We will partner with TAFE NSW and local schools on training pathways into data centre and electrical trades.

Community benefit fund

A community benefit fund is planned, with the amount and mechanism to be confirmed in consultation with the community.

Have your say

We want to hear from local residents, landholders and businesses.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Find out more about the project, assessments and how to get involved.

What is an AI data centre?

A data centre houses high-performance computers and the supporting power, cooling and communications infrastructure.

Why here?

The site is near existing high-voltage transmission infrastructure in an established energy region.

Will it affect my electricity bills?

Potential network impacts and connection arrangements will be examined through the relevant studies and regulatory processes.

How much water will it use?

Water demand depends on the final campus and cooling design. Supply options will be assessed as studies progress.

Will it be noisy?

Detailed acoustic assessments will inform design and operating controls.

What about backup power?

Backup power arrangements are part of the design and environmental assessment process.

What about bushfire risk?

Bushfire risk and management requirements will be considered through planning and design.

How can I get involved?
